University City NC

University City is an edge city located mostly within the city limits of Charlotte. This large area of town centers on the activity and culture of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Real Estate

University City has diverse real estate options, including houses, townhomes, condominiums and apartments at varying price points. Properties in University City are more affordable than those located in the Center City. However, this area has attracted developers due to its location on the outskirts of the city. One of the largest subdivisions in Charlotte is located in University City. Highland Creek is a development of 8,000 homes and 13,000 residents, and many of its neighborhoods feature golf courses, swimming pools, trails, and more.

Lifestyle and Attractions

University City is a major “edge city” located on the northeastern edge of Charlotte. As can be implied from its name, University City is home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The university is a major source of activity for residents, who attend concerts, theater programs, sports games, festivals and other events on campus. Additionally, the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens are a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. With a population of more than 160,000, this is a large area, which incorporates parts of Charlotte, Concord and Harrisburg. In fact, the area is so large that if it were to be separated from the rest of Charlotte as its own city, University City would be one of North Carolina’s 10 largest cities.

University City may be a suburban community, but it boasts cultural opportunities well beyond a typical Charlotte suburb. In addition to the activity at UNC Charlotte, there are plenty of attractions to keep residents busy. University City is also near some of the area’s most popular destinations, including Concord Mills Mall, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve, and the PNC Music Pavilion. The Lynx Charlotte light rail system now links University City to NoDa, the arts district, and Center City Charlotte. University City is home to University Research Park, one of the largest research parks in the state. It hosts major tenants, including Wells Fargo, TIAA, Duke Energy, Digital Optics and Electrolux North America.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

University City is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system, and has two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school within its boundaries. Cannon School, a renowned college-prep school with lower, middle and upper school programs, is also located nearby in Concord. University City is known as the community surrounding the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. There are a number of other colleges and universities within reach, including Queens University, Johnson & Wales University, Johnson C. Smith and more.

History

The area now known as University City was once farmland, but academics breathed a new life into this region on the outskirts of Charlotte. In 1961, Charlotte College was established 10 miles from Center City, and three years later, the state legislature approved bills to make it a four-year, state-supported college. It was thereafter renamed University of North Carolina at Charlotte, becoming the fourth campus of the statewide university system. Today, UNCC is the third-largest four-year university in the state, and includes seven professional colleges, offering 21 doctoral programs, 63 master’s degree programs, and 90 different bachelor’s degrees.

Around the same time that UNCC was starting up, Charlotte civic leaders began making plans for University Research Park, a research park to function as a magnet for high-tech research and development. The first tenant, a producer of automotive fabrics, arrived in 1968, and IBM opened a manufacturing complex of 450 acres in 1970.
