History

The first local post office was called Gibsonville when it opened in 1855, but it wasn’t until 1871 that the town officially became Gibsonville. It was named after Joseph Gibson, one of the first prominent planters in the area and a gold miner. Gold mining played a major role in Gibsonville when deposits were discovered on Gibson Hill in the early 1800s. Gibson’s house is now recognized as a Guilford County landmark property. The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum located in the former Palmer Memorial Institute, is North Carolina’s first official state historic site to honor an African American and a woman.
