During the 19th century, the area was known for its role in the ironmaking industry, with six iron facilities in Lincoln County in 1810. However, farming was the primary industry until textile mills arrived to the area.

In 1877, the community of Denver was incorporated as a North Carolina town, but it lost its incorporated status in 1971.
