History
The census-designated place of Fair Play was established in 1833. According to tradition, it was named Fair Play when a bystander urged two brawling pioneers to “play fair”. The community is located in Oconee County, which was created in 1868 and named for the Cherokee word meaning “water eyes of the hills”. The railroad played a major role in the development of the region, as the Blue Ridge Railroad connected Anderson with Walhalla in 1859.
