History
The city of Lancaster was settled by English and Scots-Irish settlers of the British House of Lancaster. The city’s nickname, “The Red Rose City,” is derived from this association, as the red rose is the insignia of the House of Lancaster. The city of York, South Carolina is Lancaster’s counterpart. York got its name and white rose symbol from the House of York in England, which fought against the House of Lancaster in the infamous War of the Roses in the 15th century. However, South Carolina’s Lancaster and York are much more peaceful and cooperative than their namesakes.
Lancaster’s most famous resident is Andrew Jackson, who is believed to have been born in Lancaster County, although some say he was born across the border in North Carolina. Lancaster’s Andrew Jackson Middle School, Andrew Jackson High School, and Andrew Jackson State Park were named in his honor.
