Dallas is a small town in the heart of North Carolina with a rich history and plenty of present-day charm. This affordable area serves as a suburb of neighboring cities Gastonia and Charlotte.
Real Estate
Dallas real estate is particularly affordable, as the median home price is well below both the state and national average. Homes in Dallas vary in style, including traditional, Colonial, Craftsman, transitional and more. You will find everything from gorgeous restored historic properties to stunning new construction homes in Dallas, many of which enjoy spacious lots and beautiful natural surroundings. The affordability of this area makes Dallas a particularly desirable area to call home.
Lifestyle and Attractions
Dallas is a small town with a population under 5,000. This provides an intimate, tight-knit feel for residents and visitors alike, as the community is well-connected through annual events and its thriving local business community. Gastonia is situated just three miles to the south and Charlotte lies about 25 miles to the east — putting plenty of shops, restaurants and other big-city attractions within reach for Dallas residents. However, the community of Dallas has much to offer, especially along its downtown area, which is the historic center of the county. This well-preserved district contains more registered historic buildings than any area in the county. Other historic sites in Dallas include the Hoyle Historic Homestead, the Holland House and the Rhyne Store.
Residents of Dallas enjoy outdoor recreational activities at the Gaston County Park at Dallas, Robinson Catfish Lake, Lineberger Maple Spring Farms and Biggerstaff Park. Dallas holds a variety of annual events and festivals, including Cotton Ginning Days, Trick or Treat on the Square, a Fourth of July Fireworks Show, and Pops in the Park. Residents and visitors may learn about area history at the Gaston County Museum located in the center of the historic district. Residents of Dallas may travel to Gastonia and Charlotte for employment, as each city hosts large businesses such as Gaston County Schools and CaroMont Health in Gastonia, and Bank of America, Duke Energy, Carolinas Medical Center and Novant Health in Charlotte.
Nearby Schools and Higher Education
Dallas has four public schools in Gaston County Schools, including Costner Elementary, Carr Elementary, W.C. Friday Middle School and North Gaston High School. Tabernacle Christian Academy is the only private school located in Dallas, but there are a few others in surrounding areas. Gaston College is situated on the edge of Dallas, and there are a number of colleges and universities within reach in Charlotte and Gastonia.
History
German and Scots-Irish immigrants settled the area that is now Dallas in the 1750s. In 1863, Dallas was officially incorporated, making it Gaston County’s oldest incorporated town. It was named after George M. Dallas, the vice president of the United States under James K. Polk. When the county formed in 1846, no towns were located within its border, but it was decided that the county seat would be located no more than two miles from Long Creek Baptist Church, which is one mile east of Dallas’ historic square. Therefore, Dallas served as the county seat from 1846 until 1911, when Gastonia became the new seat.
Several of the original buildings still remain in Dallas, including the old Gaston County Courthouse, which was renovated after a fire in 1874 and now holds the police department. The Hoffman Hotel is now owned by Gaston County Museum and contains a variety of permanent and traveling exhibits. The downtown district in Dallas is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and holds more registered historic buildings than any area in the county.
