This is a valuable area to invest in real estate, as prices are low but the growing popularity of this town may produce a significant increase in value over time.

Lifestyle and Attractions

King is a small town located in the Triad region of North Carolina. The town straddles two counties, Stokes County and Forsyth County. With a population of about 7,000, King boasts a desirable small-town feel, but is only about 20 minutes from Winston-Salem, putting big city conveniences within reach. Residents may access US-52 running alongside town to reach Winston-Salem for entertainment, dining, shopping and even employment. The community comes together with a number of annual events and festivals, including KingFest, Royce’s Bluegrass Jam, and the Stokes County Agricultural Fair.

King is packed with parks, including Recreation Acres, which hosts a two-story community building for events, lighted ball fields, a soccer field, a lighted walking trail, a children’s play area, and a picnic shelter with grills. Central Park is a 25-acre natural area with a pond, an outdoor amphitheater, a historic log cabin and walking trails. Less than 10 miles away lies Pilot Mountain State Park, the home of the most recognizable mountain in North Carolina. The community of King is proud of their Veteran’s Memorial, a pentagon-shaped memorial dedicated to all the veterans who served in the military from World War I to the present day.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Students in King are assigned to six schools in the Stokes County Schools. Additionally, there are 17 private schools located in the King and Winston-Salem vicinity. Although King contains no institutions of higher learning within its boundaries, a reasonable commute puts plenty of options within reach. Nearby colleges and universities include University of North Carolina at Greensboro, High Point University, Winston-Salem State University, and Wake Forest University.

History

The area now known as King was originally a cluster of tiny towns sharing a single church in 1812. A man named Charles King constructed a cabin in the area in 1826, and many years later, in 1840, a school was built, followed by a second church in 1873, and finally a general store and shoe shop.

Although the town saw significant growth, many still called the area “King’s Cabin”, and the name lasted for decades, even after the King family moved north due to their opposition to slavery. The first post office opened and a railroad was constructed in 1888, and the post office kept the name “King’s Cabin.”

Over time, roads, automobiles and highways arrived to the area, putting King’s Cabin on the map primarily because of its proximity to Winston-Salem. The area experienced more and more growth, and was officially incorporated as King in 1983. Charles King and his wife never returned to King, and never knew that the town was named after them.
