Tega Cay was originally a development, and not a city. The developer broke ground in 1970 on land formerly owned by Duke Power Company, and eventually built roads, a golf course, tennis courts, and a clubhouse. After houses were built and a guard gate was erected, residents moved into this Polynesian-themed community. However, in 1982, the developer filed bankruptcy, and the residents formed a city to protect their interests. In 2000, the city annexed several other neighborhoods, causing the community to double in population.
