Lifestyle and Attractions
The small town of Belmont is situated about 15 miles west of Charlotte and 12 miles east of Gastonia. This central location puts a wide selection of employment opportunities, dining and shopping destinations, and entertainment within reach for residents of Belmont. With a population just over 10,000, Belmont has maintained its small-town feel, centering on a historic downtown area with historic homes and buildings, street lamps, brick sidewalks, and a charming town clock.

The town comes together with a number of annual community events and festivals, including Friday Night Live, a free outdoor concert series, in addition to a Christmas parade, Halloween party, fall festival and more. Business and leisure travelers may access the Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a short drive.

Belmont is surrounded by immense natural beauty and there are plenty of places residents may enjoy the outdoors through recreational activities. The award-winning Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is nearby as well, providing more than 380 acres of breathtaking gardens. Belmont has a number of pristine parks and trails, including Stowe Park located downtown and the Seven Oaks Preserve Trail winding through a wooded area.

Many Belmont residents work in and commute to Charlotte or Gastonia, while others may work at corporations in town, with more than 25 percent of employees in sales and office jobs.

History
Settlement in the area that is now Belmont started in the 1750s around a fort built due to hostilities with the Native American Cherokee Tribe. The original name of the community was Garibaldi Station, but it was changed to Belmont in 1883 in honor of August Belmont, a prominent New York banker. Beginning in the 1850s, Belmont turned into a mill town, and its motto became “The City of Diversified Textiles,” although the last of the family-owned mills, R.L. Stowe Mills Inc., closed in 2009. Belmont has actively worked to preserve its historical buildings, and the Belmont Historical Society works towards “preserving the past for the sake of the future”.
