History
The village of Clover was originally a railway stop connecting Yorkville and what is now known as Gastonia in 1876. The town grew around the site of a 5,000-gallon water tank built to serve the steam engines of the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad. According to local legend, patches of clover began to sprout up where excess water spilled out of the water tank. Railroad workers thus started referring to the town as “Clover Patch.” The town was officially chartered on December 24, 1887, and quickly became a booming textile community. The textile industry continues to play a large role in the community’s economy, and Clover has seen steady growth, reaching a population of 5,094 in 2010.
