Much of the charm and attraction of this resort-like community is because of the creation of Lake Wylie. In 1904, the Catawba Power Company, which later became Duke Energy, constructed a dam on the Catawba River near Fort Mill. Thus, Lake Wylie was formed. It was the first lake on the river, preceding Lake Norman by 60 years. The dam was rebuilt in 1924, and the lake‚Äôs surface expanded to 13,443 acres and its shoreline increased to 325 miles.
Housing in the Lake Wylie community experienced significant growth during the 1990s and early 2000s, and most homes were built after 1990, with less than two percent of the housing units constructed before 1960. This lakefront community has become a popular residential area for those who work in Charlotte and surrounding areas.
