Taylors is a large suburb located on the outskirts of Greenville in the Upstate region of South Carolina. This unincorporated community is focused on arts, community and outdoor recreation.

Real Estate

The cost of living in Taylors is less than the U.S. standard, and the median home price is lower than that of the state of South Carolina. However, the house value growth rate of Taylors is much lower than both the state and national averages. You will discover a variety of homes for sale in Taylors, ranging from quaint historic properties to grandiose mansions on large lots.

Lifestyle and Attractions

With a population of more than 20,000, Taylors is a large suburb nestled between the larger city of Greenville and the smaller city of Greer, which are located about 8 and 5 miles away, respectively. On average, Taylors residents spend 21 minutes per day commuting to their workplace, which may be located in Greer, Greenville, and other nearby cities. Taylors was never incorporated as a city, and is instead described as a Census-Designated Place.

The community comes together with a variety of events throughout the year, including Enchanted Tracks, a fall festival with trick-or-treating and other Halloween activities. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation at the Pavilion Recreation Complex, with an ice-skating rink, football field, tennis courts, a dog park, an indoor bounce house, and more. Taylors is focused on the arts, evident in Taylors Mill, an arts complex hosting an event space, a coffee shop, studio space for local artists, and more. This is a central community hub for events, gatherings, and artistic activities.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Students in Taylors attend schools in the Greenville County School District, the largest school district in the state and the 45th-largest in the country. Taylors residents have access to eight public schools, including six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Greenville County hosts 56 private schools, many of which are within 10 minutes of Taylors. There are no institutions of higher learning located within the boundaries of Taylors. However, residents may access a number of colleges and universities in nearby Greenville, including Bob Jones University, Webster University, Virginia College, North Greenville University, and more.

History

Taylors was home to a resort from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Activity centered on Chick Springs, a mineral spring thought to have healing powers. Settlers were drawn to the springs, so Dr. Burwell Chick, a resident of Charleston, purchased the land surrounding the spring and built a resort community.

The Southern Railway arrived in the area during the 1870s, which shifted the focus of Taylors from the springs to the property of a man named Alfred Taylor. A railroad depot was built on his land, which eventually became known as Taylor’s Station, inspiring the present-day name of Taylors. Beginning in the early 1900s, the heart of town was near the intersection of Taylors Road and Main Street.

Taylors was never incorporated as a city, although area residents have expressed concern about the tax base, and have therefore pushed for the creation of a municipal government.
