History
Lincoln County was established in 1779, and was named for American Major General Benjamin Lincoln, the commander of the Southern Department of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1780, Colonel Francis Locke led a group of volunteer Patriot militia to defeat a larger force of Loyalists at Lincolnton’s Ramsour’s Mill. In 1785, Lincolnton was named the county seat of Lincoln County, and founders laid out the town plan in a grid system of quadrants clustered around the courtyard, as it is seen today. Lincolnton boasts 23 historic resources listed on the National Register of Historic Places and 24 historical roadside markers, many of which are located within the downtown area. Lincolnton was home to the Schenk Mill, the first successful textile mill built south of New England.
