Residents may travel approximately 2.5 miles west from the center of Mauldin to access Lake Conestee Nature Park, a 400-acre woodland oasis of forests and wetlands along the Reedy River. History

The first land grant in Mauldin was awarded to Benjamin Griffith in 1784. In 1820, the city of Mauldin was named for William L. Mauldin, who used his political clout as lieutenant governor of South Carolina to convince the Greenville Laurens Railroad Company to reroute its line through the village instead of bypassing it. Today, the tracks run through the heart of the city, passing directly in front of the Mauldin Cultural Center. The city became a ghost town during the Civil War, as most citizens left town to fight, and the city was officially incorporated in 1969.
