Lifestyle and Attractions

Weddington is an affluent suburb of Charlotte, located in the southeastern edge of the Charlotte metro area. Weddington is the third wealthiest town in the state of North Carolina, with an average household income more than twice than that of the nation. The most common fields of work in Weddington include management, business and finance. Weddington is a primarily residential area with a population comprised mostly of families, and only two percent of the population is single with no children. Residents of Weddington enjoy a central location near some of the area’s most popular attractions, including destinations in Charlotte, Ballantyne and Matthews.

The Town Hall is a locally designated historic house built in 1894, serving as a site for community events, such as an annual Easter egg hunt. Hunter Farm is a local farm hosting fun seasonal activities, such as hayrides, bonfires, strawberry picking and community gardens. Weddington Corners Shopping Center functions as the town center, as it is the only commercial area and there is no traditional downtown and very few shops and restaurants in Weddington. However, there are plenty of places for shopping, dining and entertainment nearby, including Waverly Shopping Center, Arboretum Shopping Center, Carolina Place Mall, SouthPark Mall, Ballantyne Village, Stonecrest at Piper Glen, Blakeney, and Waverly. With no municipal parks or neighborhoods in Weddington, the Weddington Optimist Club operates the Weddington Optimist Park, a 16-acre parcel with sports fields, a volleyball court, a picnic shelter, a walking trail, and a playground.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Weddington has four public schools in Union County Public Schools, and there are eight private schools in the vicinity. Weddington contains no institutions of higher learning within its boundaries, but a reasonable commute puts many opportunities within reach. Nearby colleges and universities include Johnson & Wales University, Queens University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Wingate University, and more.

History

Waxhaw Indians prospered for ages before the first settlers from Germany, England, Wales and Scotland arrived to the area. After serving in the Revolutionary War, a man named Reuben Boswell moved to what is now Weddington. Boswell’s grandson, Reuben B. Weddington, became a prominent citizen who donated funds to build the Methodist Episcopal Church. His donations to the church and its affiliated school led the church to change its name to Weddington Methodist Church. The community that grew up around the church inherited his name over time.

The community was primarily an agricultural area until the 1970s, when Charlotte started experiencing rapid growth. In 1983, fearing annexation by Charlotte, the town officially incorporated as Weddington.
