History

Some believe that the name Kannapolis comes from the Greek phrase “City of Looms,” but most historians say the name comes from a man named James W. Cannon, who built Cannon Mills and the entire city as he was energizing his textile empire. The company was largely successful because of its coarse-cotton yarns made into “Cannon Cloths,” or towels.

The unincorporated city was first called “Cannon City,” then “Cannapolis” in the early 1900s, and was incorporated and named Kannapolis in 1984. James W. Cannon built an entire community around his mill, including a hospital, roads, a theater, a YMCA, and a civic center, plus 1,600 homes. By 1928, Cannon consolidated regional mills to form the Cannon Mills Company, which became the largest producer of sheets and towels in the world.

As globalization began to damage the American textile industry, Cannon Mills was forced to merge with Fieldcrest Mills, which was eventually sold to Pillowtex Corporation. The company closed its doors in 2003, resulting in a monumental layoff of 4,340 jobs.

Shortly after, David Murdock, the billionaire owner of Dole Food Company, purchased the site of the old mill and built the North Carolina Research Campus. This cutting-edge research center is emerging as a world leader in nutrition, disease prevention, and agricultural research.
