2021 colors of the year

October 22, 2020 - By marketing@allentate.com

After a turbulent year (to say the least), it’s safe to say we’re more than ready to think ahead to 2021. We’re in good company, as many of the major players in the paint world have already announced their Colors of the Year for 2021. While these palettes and shades run the gamut from neutral to bold, they all evoke comfort and well being — two things we could all use more of these days.

Ready to meet the colors of the (near) future?

Sherwin-Williams 2021 Color of the Year

If this year has left you craving warmth, solace, and time alone in nature, Urbane Bronze (SW 7048) will probably speak to you. Gone are the icy grays of the past. The Sherwin-Williams Color of 2021 is a deep taupe encompassing both brown and gray, whose warm tone grounds the room and invites retreat.

Pair this bold, organic hue with a warm neutral and accent the space with materials that echo Urbane Bronze’s earthy feel, like woven fabrics, wood, and stone. The many shades of green encompassed by a collection of houseplants will do wonders when paired with this color.

“Urbane Bronze encourages you to create a sanctuary space for mindful reflection and renewal,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

DIY Suggestions:

  • On the wall: pair with Modern Gray (SW 7632) for a simple and understated effect, or the similarly earthy green of Messenger Bag (SW 7740) for more of a statement.
  • As an accent: Stylish yet calming, Urbane Bronze is perfect for an accent wall. Try it on built-ins, cabinets, window trim, or your front door to bring the sophistication of this color to your home without committing to an entire room.

 Behr: 2021 Color Trend Palette

In the spirit of 2021, Behr revealed a 21-color palette around the theme of comfort. Organized around six themes and designed for mixing and matching, the Color Trend Palette is “a new, elevated articulation of comfort that goes beyond traditional beige, gray, and green hues, and embraces color in a way that can redefine and enhance any type of space,” says Behr Vice President of Color Erika Woelfel.

This palette echoes the versatility that we’ve required of our homes this year, as dining areas have become classrooms and master suites have become home offices. The goal of this palette is to create harmony as people continue living and working in the same spaces.

“Optimistic View” looks to the year ahead with bold, energetic colors like Saffron Strands, Maple Glaze, and Exotic Caribe. Globetrotters will love the way this color collection conjures memories of faraway oceans and sunsets.

“Quiet Haven” features deep, modern, statement-making shades to reassure and ground us. We love how Nocturne Blue walls and Barnwood Gray accents make a perfect pair.

Similar to Sherwin-Williams’ Color of the Year, “Calm Zone” is designed to bring natural vibes indoors. The blues and greens of Jojoba, Royal Orchard, Dayflower and Jean Jacket Blue are meant to soothe and renew.

“Casual Comfort” consists of the warm and earthy Almond Wisp, Modern Mocha, Sierra, and Canyon Dusk. When taken together, these tones convey a modern take on the rustic farmhouse.

“Subtle Focus” strives for serenity with gentle pastels like Wishful Green and Seaside Villa combined with the bright accents of Cellini Gold. With many people working from home surrounded by family members and pets, who couldn’t use a little more focus?

“Outdoor Escape” is an exterior collection that takes the guesswork out of curbside appeal. All of the colors in the 2021 palette are available at Home Depot stores.

DIY Suggestions:

  • Infuse a bathroom with classic elegance using Seaside Villa with dark wood furnishings. Add a palette of natural greens using a variety of small plants.
  • Looking for the perfect accent wall color in a study or den? Jean Jacket Blue could be The One!
  • If you want a new look for your walls but you’re not in the market for a complete overhaul of your furniture and accents, choose the neutrals from this palette, like Almond Wisp and Sierra.

Valspar 2021 Colors of the Year

Here’s another palette to mix and match for an overall vibe of well being. Valspar’s 12 Colors of the Year are designed to create a sense of calm in 2021 after the metaphorical storm of the year that preceded it.

Available exclusively at Lowe’s, this palette is all about empowering homeowners to create an atmosphere of comfort and calm in their living spaces. The complementary combination of these 12 colors makes it easy to DIY your way to a fresh look inside or outside your home.

“These lifestyle changes coupled with a surge in DIY home activity helped guide our selection of a range of colors for Valspar’s 2021 Colors of the Year that can not only transform your space but also elevate your mood,” says Valspar Color Marketing Manager Sue Kim.

Whether you want to make a splash with lively Lucy Blue or lift the spirits of your sunroom with Soft Candlelight, this palette offers easy options for every room.

DIY Suggestions:

  • Revive a dull bathroom by pairing the apricot quality of Arizona Dust with stone and marble accents.
  • Use the luxurious Academy Gray for the most relaxing spot in your home. Pair with the warm and calming Unforgettable for trim work.

PPG Paints: 2021 Color Palette of the Year

For PPG, three is the magic number. They announced not one color, but their first-ever Palette of the Year: Be Well, a trio that “celebrates beauty of all kinds and relates to those who prioritize wellness in mind, body, and spirit,” according to the announcement.

Transcend is a warm beige that conjures nostalgia, a cup of coffee with plenty of cream, or sand that’s been saturated with sea mist. Big Cypress is pure comfort; a gingery, earthy color with persimmon undertones. Misty Aqua is a watercolor cerulean blue that really pops in contrast to its warm, comforting counterparts.

“This organic and hopeful palette represents what we have been longing for after decades of overstimulation and overconsumption—simplicity and restfulness,” says Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager.

DIY Suggestions:

  • Use Big Cypress for the main color in the room where you tend to cozy up with blankets. Simple gold accents are magical with this paint color.
  • Use PPG’s 60-30-10 design rule: 60% of a room uses the dominant color, 30% features the secondary color, and 10% is left for the accent.
