Located in Union County, one of the fastest-growing counties in North Carolina, Monroe offers a more relaxed way of life while providing easy access to urban amenities. An historic Victorian courthouse sits atop a central square, surrounded by government buildings, shops, restaurants and other businesses. Monroe’s downtown also features shops, chic spas and salons on a quaint, historic Main Street. Fountains and small park areas can be found in downtown as well.
Highway 74 connects residents with more services and businesses in Charlotte, and Uptown Charlotte is about 30 miles away. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is slightly more than 30 miles to the northwest.
Union County’s economy includes industrial and distribution businesses and advanced manufacturing, particularly in the aerospace industry. Agriculture also is important, notably with the production of soybeans, corn and broiler chickens.
With its large homes, big lots and property suitable for horses, Union County has one of the largest equestrian populations in the state. Hiking and riding trails are available on greenways and elsewhere throughout the county, and various stables offer horseback riding lessons. Union County also is the site of the Queens Cup Steeplechase, one of steeplechase horse racing’s major annual events.
