This small town is conveniently located just six miles from Lexington, about 15 miles from Winston-Salem, and about 20 miles from High Point. With a town motto of “Welcome to Welcome, A Friendly Place”, Welcome is a friendly and inviting place to be. The town is widely known as the home of the Richard Childress Racing Museum, an expansive facility filled with all things NASCAR, including 47 racing vehicles, videos, displays, and memorabilia. Richard Childress, a former racing driver in the 1970s and early 1980s, also owns the impressive 60-acre Childress Vineyards in nearby Lexington.
Welcome residents benefit from a proximity to Winston-Salem, where they can go for attractions such as the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem, the Stevens Center for Performing Arts, Kaleideum and more. Welcome is home to Boone’s Cave Park, a 100-acre park along the Yadkin River, with hiking trails, and opportunities for fishing, canoeing or kayaking in the river. History
The area now known as Welcome was settled primarily by people arriving from Germany and was once called Hinklesville, presumably after a founding family or early resident. The current name of Welcome was given because of a dispute over what to name the local railroad depot. There are two legends pointing to the origin of the name: it was chosen either because of the depot’s welcome sign, or because a man declared, “Everybody’s welcome here!”
