20th Century Fun Fact: Tom Gongaware was once an FM Radio DJ of some note…winning Billboard’s top national honor as “Air Personality of the Year.” The popular former Rock Jock went on to a successful career in radio, TV and broadcast management in a variety of cities before becoming a REALTOR® in 1989. He strived to be an "amplified personality" on a very different stage.
Tom quickly replicated his successes in broadcasting by posting strong numbers as a residential sales agent. After 6 years, he segued back into a management role with his company, serving as Broker-In-Charge for the firm's flagship office. A few mergers and acquisitions later, Tom remained in a senior management position and continued the coaching, mentoring and recruiting of sales agents as a Vice President and Managing Broker for a new company. He gained additional responsibilities for the firm's marketing strategy, as well as the development and integration of technology solutions for the company's agents and clients. As such, he became the "technology evangelist" for the company during a time of dramatic change in brokerage operations and consumer expectations.
Fast forward to the 21st Century: Tom is now the General Manager for the Allen Tate Company, the Carolinas’ #1 residential real estate firm. Based in Raleigh, he has specific responsibilities for REALTOR® and Industry Relations and provides risk management support for agents and leadership across the entire Allen Tate footprint. Given his love of baseball, he prefers to think of his role as that of a “utility infielder.”
Tom is the 2016 President-Elect of the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS®. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), the North Carolina Association of REALTORS® (NCAR), as well as the Triangle Multiple Listing Service (MLS). He serves as President of the North Carolina Real Estate Business Institute (REBI), formerly the Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers. He is a former trustee of the Eastern N.C. Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Tom has earned the Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager (CRB®) designation presented by the Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers (CRB®). He is a Graduate of the REALTOR® Institute (GRI) and holds the e-PRO® certification from the National Association of REALTORS®. He has also received the "At Home with Diversity®" certification from HUD and NAR.
He is married to Pam Kohl, Executive Director of the North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. They have two adult kids, Sofie and Max. He continues to “channel” rock and roll, and lives by this quote from Frank Zappa: “Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.”
