The First Step in Getting Your Real Estate License
In order to obtain a real estate license, the State of North Carolina currently requires that you complete the following steps:
1. Receive a completion certificate by passing a state-approved 75-hour provisional broker course
2. Submit your certificate along with an application form and $30 to the N.C. Real Estate Commission
3. Obtain a criminal background check from Carolina Investigative Research, Inc.
4. Pass the North Carolina state exam. A $66.00 examination fee is payable directly to PSI and NOT to the Real Estate Commission
The Allen Tate School of Real Estate and all of our instructors are fully certified by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission to offer approved courses. We offer a variety of schedules to accommodate your personal needs. The 75-hour Provisional Broker course is a comprehensive introduction for the prospective real estate agent and is considered to be one of the states finest exam prep courses.
Policies and Prices
Tuition for the Provisional Broker Class is $399 and includes your textbook, Modern Real Estate Practice in North Carolina: 6th Edition and a student workbook.
- Students are required by the state to attend 80% of class sessions
- Courses consist of either 10 or 19 class sessions
- Courses are offered half day, full day, nights and weekends for your convenience
- Students must pass the course with a score of 80% or higher to receive a certificate of completion
- Students who do not fulfill either attendance or test score requirements are required by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission to repeat the entire course of study

Rita Horton, Executive Director

After obtaining her broker's license in 1979, Rita spent several years in real
estate sales for other companies before starting her own firm where she trained
and managed 15 sales agents. She was recruited to become assistant manager of
Allen Tate's Carmel/51 Office in 1988. Then she helped manage 100 agents, hired
new agents and coordinated the training program. Prior to becoming the School's
director in 2002, Rita was manager of the Allen Tate Matthews Office, where she
hired, managed and trained an office of 50 agents. Rita has the GRI, SRES, and
CRS designations, is a graduate of Dale Carnegie course and has been a
volunteer with Mecklenburg County Community Development's affordable housing
program since 1991. Rita is also on the Board of Directors of Charlotte
Regional Realtor Association.
